Dinar, Malik

Dinar, Malik
One of the Indian slaves of 'Ala al-Din Khalji (1296-1316) who was for some time the sultan's superintendent of elephants (shihna-i pil). He survived Malik Kafur's drive against 'Ala al-Din's old nobles during the last illness of the sultan. Malik Kafur sent him to Gujarat in 1315 to control the situation, as the army officers loyal to Alp Khan had rebelled on hearing of the latter's ex-ecution. Dinar returned from the frontier of Gujarat on hearing of 'Ala al-Din's death (4 January 1316). The next sultan, Qutb al-Din Mubarak Shah (1316-1320), married Malik Dinar's daughter and was given the title Zafar Khan by Dinar. He was then appointed gov-ernor of Gujarat. After the recall of ' Ain ul-Mulk Multani from Gu-jarat, the situation there had gotten out of control, but Malik Dinar and the nobles assisting him there were able to manage. Malik Dinar disappeared from the scene around the time Ghiyas al-Din Tughlaq rose to sovereignty (1320) after the overthrow of Khusrau Shah.
